#Repost @columbus_zoo:BABY ANIMALS: Two adorable faces have joined the Zoo family! Both births were considered ground-breaking in their own right, as the Pallas’ cat birth marked the second live offspring ever produced with artificial insemination in Pallas’ cats and the Asian small-clawed otter pup was the first of its species to be born at the Zoo in 14 years!
A female Pallas’ cat kitten was born on May 23 and guests may see the newborn starting to venture into the habitat with mom! First-time mom Manda and dad Paval were observed mating in the winter, but they were ultimately unable to conceive naturally. After determining that the female, Manda, was not pregnant, the Zoo’s animal care staff and veterinarians worked with the Carl H. Lindner Jr. Family Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden to conduct an artificial insemination procedure in mid-March, near theend of the pair’s breeding season. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan® recommended the pairing of these threatened cats.

The Columbus Zoo is also proud to welcome the arrival of another vulnerable species – an Asian small-clawed otter pup named Triton, born on May 17.

Animal care specialists note that Triton has a “playful and independent personality” and both first-time parents have been very involved in the care and rearing of the young pup. Triton will not be on view to the public for a few months yet, as he is just beginning his parent-led swimming lessons.

Both Asta and Oscar have been part of the Asian small-clawed otter Species Survival Plan® (SSP) to enhance conservation of their species in their native range and to maintain a sustainable population of Asian small-clawed otters in human care.

#Repost @palmbeachzoo:THE FAMOUS FLEHMEN RESPONSE. Today's WILD #TigerTuesday post is dedicated to those weird faces that have prompted a fair share of side-eye. Some people affectionately call the grimacing look, easily identified by an open mouth, wrinkled nose, raised chin and gaping tongue 'stinky face'. In this case, Lead Keeper Damian Lechner says one of our Malayan tigers was responding to leftover browse from another tiger. Tigers communicate through chemical messages, called pheromones. The process which is called Flehmen, allows the tiger to inhale a scent into an organ on the roof of their mouth (the Jacobson’s Organ). Male tigers use this to gather information about females in the immediate vicinity! Pretty cool, right?

While basking, reptiles will lie perpendicular to the direction of the sun in order to maximize the amount of sunlight falling on their skin. Little Foot’s keepers will often take him out into sunny areas to catch some rays! Mexican spider monkeys are critically endangered, so Tabbitha reminds us all to do our part and help protect the species by buying sustainably sourced products like shade grown coffee.

In the largest study of its kind to date, researchers from @TheWCS and other groups used mitochondrial DNA—different from nuclear DNA in that it helps scientists trace maternal lineages—from more than 3,000 individual humpback whales across the Southern Hemisphere and Arabian Sea to examine how whale populations are related. They found population structure is largely driven by female #whales that return annually to the same breeding grounds and by the early experiences of calves that accompany their mothers on their first round-trip to the feeding grounds.
