As the Department of Justice continues its efforts to fulfill President Trump’s commitment to reducing violent crime in America, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced today that 12 cities are joining the Department’s newly organized National Public Safety Partnership. “Turning back the recent troubling increase in violent crime in our country is a top priority of the Department of Justice and the Trump Administration, as we work to fulfill the President’s promise to make America safe again,” said Attorney General Sessions. “The Department of Justice will work with American cities suffering from serious violent crime problems. There is no doubt that there are many strategies that are proven to reduce crime. Our new National Public Safety Partnership program will help these communities build up their own capacity to fight crime, by making use of data-driven, evidence-based strategies tailored to specific local concerns, and by drawing upon the expertise and resources of our Department.”
“The opioid epidemic nationwide has caused havoc and heartbreak for our children, friends and neighbors,” said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. “Any fentanyl exposure can kill innocent law enforcement, first responders and the public. As we continue to fight this epidemic, it is critical that we provide every tool necessary to educate the public and law enforcement about the dangers of fentanyl and its deadly consequences.” The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is releasing an updated video message to law enforcement nationwide about the dangers of handling fentanyl and its deadly consequences. Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg and two local police detectives from New Jersey appear on the video to urge law enforcement personnel who come in contact with fentanyl or fentanyl compounds to take the drugs directly to a lab. “Men and women who so bravely protect the citizens of this country should not have to fear becoming targets of senseless acts of violence simply because of their profession. The Justice Department has zero tolerance for ambush-style attacks on law enforcement officers and the National Blue Alert Network will provide this country with the necessary framework for rapid response to help save lives and apprehend those who are a threat to public safety,” said Acting Associate Attorney General Jesse Panuccio today as the Justice Department, along with the Federal Communications Commission (@FCC) and Department of Homeland Security (@DHSgov), today announced the nationwide rollout of the National Blue Alert Network, including newly developed deliverables and federal interagency cooperation to enhance the safety and support of America’s law enforcement officers. Under implementation by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), the National Blue Alert Network promotes rapid dissemination of information to law enforcement, the media and the public about violent offenders who have killed, seriously injured or pose an imminent threat to law enforcement, or when an officer is missing in connection with official duties.
