During the passed decades, Ethiopia has experienced strong economic and population groth. The need for the extension of agricultural fields resulted in deforestation. Between 1960 and 2012 forested areas declined from 37% of land coverage to 3%. This in turn resulted in erosion of fertile lands and worsened the living conditions of primarily the rural poor. Even though there are reforestation programs under way it will take generations to regain original soil fertility.

The soils around Dire Dawa are stoney, the riverbeds dried up. Drinking water and fertile soils are rare. In a quiet, remote place we met this precious family. Ahmed, his wife and their six children live in a little, stoney, one-room hut. Fetching water, collecting firewood and selling some portions on the three hours of walk distant market in the city constitute their daily life and income. Enjera from maize bought at the market determines the daily fare. Because she lost one of her sons in the ethiopian-eritrean war and the other one because of difficult conditions, she lives alone in a village in Wolaita region. Helping hands and invested time from neighbouring friends provide her with water, coffee and firewood, but sometimes she can't afford food to be sufficiently nurished. There are so many people sharing similar destinies.
