Amherst College Office of Admission staff descend Memorial Hill, minutes after partaking in the #icebucketchallenge to promote ALS awareness, challenging "Little 3" colleagues from @williamscollege and @wesleyan_u in the process. To view the "chilling" video of their feat, visit http://YouTube.com/AmherstCollege. To learn more about ALS and research, visit alsa.org.
According to the ALS Association, the disease is a progressive, terminal illness that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. While it was first found in 1869, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis garnered international attention 75 years ago, when New York Yankees player Lou Gehrig gave his farewell to baseball. As a result, many now refer to ALS as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
