Not sure what is worse about these images of the war dead; the corpses themselves, or the casual postures of the living standing nearby. This is an image of a dead Confederate soldier surrounded by Union troops. #civilwar #corpses #stereophotograph #photography_aas

  • civilwarexaminerTo be honest, this looks staged. It could be a Confederate soldier but the person still clinches his rifle and his uniform looks closer to being a Union one rather than a Confederate.
  • civilwarexaminerDo we know where this photo was taken? So many photos were staged. Even the famous images of Confederate dead at Gettysburg and later at Spotsylvania Court House and Petersburg were staged as photographers and their assistants moved bodies and accoutrements to get the right shot.
  • americanantiquarianWe agree @americancivilwardaybyday, this does look staged. There was no info on the mount, but certainly most of the images of the dead were set up shots by the photographers. We will be posting more from this set as work continues on the digitization.
  • civilwarexaminer@americanantiquarian Awesome. Look forward to it!
