  • dadsdiscdelightsOne of Dad's most favourite things is to lose himself in his music room, select an album and get on down. He's one cool dude! 🔸SHORTY ROGERS WITH HIS ORCHESTRA AND THE GIANTS - 'SHORT STOPS' (1953) 🔸
(on RCA label - very important!) Dad says: Early examples of what became known as West Coast Jazz, by Shorty Rogers with his 7-piece Giants, and his 17-piece Big Band circa 1953/54. These tracks would influence TV and film music for some time to come. The groups included as well as Rogers, arrangers, Jimmy Giuffre, Bill Holman and Marty Paich, father of David Paich of Toto, and Jazz-Stars-to-be Hampton Hawes, Shelly Manne, Maynard Ferguson, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Bill Perkins and Zoot Sims. These were mainly ex-sidemen of the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman and other big bands which had disbanded in Los Angeles in the late 40's early 50's. Curiously most prominent 'West Coast' musicians were from the East Coast. They settled in LA and joined the burgeoning Hollywood studio orchestras of the day. The tune you heard was Coop de Graas featuring Bob Cooper and John Graas. Other killer titles are Short Stop and Tales of an African Lobster. Play The Sweetheart of Sigmund Freud and if it don't make you move, consult a physician...👨👋

  • kencavWhat a fun way to use Instagram! Educational, and as a jazz fan will have to check out some of the recordings. Also noticed the "great day in Harlem" poster by Art Kane with 57 of the best in jazz...in the video! I photographed one of the few women in the photo, Marian McPartland.

  • dadsdiscdelights@kencav Thank you. Re: the Art Kane...there are two of these and I'm now after the one with Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Eldridge mugging at the right hand side. Discovered Marion McPartland in my early twenties with the 'At the Hickory House' album. Knockout. I now have most of her records of this period.
