shekispeaksI always wondered why there was a golden fire hydrant down my street. I finally found out. After the 1906 Earthquake the Mission district was burning. The water pipes under the city broke and the hydrants were not working. Only this hydrant on 20th and Church was working and firemen used this to douse a major fire in the mission. Hence it is called the Hydrant which saved the mission and painted golden in respect. They repaint it every year on the anniversary of the Earthquake. #urbanhistory #sanfrancisco
