  • kathy17luongMy father was involved in a serious car accident while using a motorcycle taxi service in China on October 9, 2013. From the accident, he suffered a C5 spinal cord injury that has left him in a paralyzed state. He has lost sensation and movement from his shoulders down, and has challenges breathing independently
  • kathy17luongWe faced numerous challenges with the administrative process and the politics of China. In order to receive any medical care, including admission, the hospital must secure a deposit. Due to money transfer problems to China, my father had to wait 5 days in excruciating pain for the money to come through for his surgery. Though his surgery was successful, he began having breathing problems and needed the assistance of an oxygen machine. He had an oxygen tube and feeding tube inserted through his nose, leaving him unable to speak and eat. For 2 months, he stayed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with the cost of over 4,000+ RNB ($700.00 USD) per day. There was an agreement between the ICU doctor and traffic police department to continue treatment and medication for my father disregarding the heavy medical bills as the officer reassured that the insurance claim is pending. As my father’s condition improved, he was able to transfer to a normal room but with this transfer, the hospital no longer honored the note and agreement. He is currently living in a hospital with squalid conditions: lacking the resources, quality of care, and equipment to assist with his recovery. With limited nurses, it is also customary for family members to provide care for the patients.
  • kathy17luongMy mother has left everything behind in the U.S. and is currently taking full care of my father in the hospital including performing transfers on her own and providing self-care for him. She sleeps next to my father’s bedside on a fold out beach chair, living in a freezing building with no heating. Because my mother is no longer working, she is unable to pay off the current expenses. The hospital provides zero amenities and the hospital areas are extremely unsanitary. My father being in another country, we are unfamiliar with the regulations and procedures of China and resources are very limited there compared to the U.S. The drivers involved in the accident have insurance, but the claim will be a long and slow process that can be a waiting period of at least 6 months. The hospital is requiring that we pay all expenses in order to receive treatment for the rehabilitation process. We are facing a financial crisis paying for medical expenses in China while maintaining our home mortgage and bills in the U.S. My father's therapy was abruptly discontinued recently due to the unpaid medical balance of currently 250,000 RNB ($42,000.00 USD).
  • kathy17luongWe really miss our parents and we hope that they come home as soon as our father gets well enough to travel. We hope to fly my parents back when my father has made enough progress in his recovery and has become stabilized. Our ultimate goal is to enroll him into a better hospital with a rehabilitation program to continue his road to recovery.
As money is a restricting factor now and moving forward, we are hoping for support, resources, connections, and donations of any kind. Any amount is appreciated and will help with the recovery process and the journey home. At this time, every cent counts; as five U.S. dollars can purchase one day of meals for my parents in China. We deeply appreciate and are grateful for all of your support
