hautepopSquinting into bright, cold noonday sun at the Grand Canyon, having climbed up from the river at sunrise this morning
Yesterday morning a total stranger offered me a spare bunk at sold-out Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon. I had five seconds to decide before he and his group walked out the door. I said yes
So I hiked the South Kaibab trail with sixty-something Steve and eight friends, from icy subzero temperatures up top to the desert midway and sheltered gorges below. Talked to a field biologist from Arctic Canada who surveyed caribou populations. Watched California condors circle lazily on thermals. At the hostel, drank mule-portered beers and got taught to play Texas Hold 'Em by Jessica, an LSE Anthropology graduate... I won
So Rim to River closes out 2015, then Cactus to Clouds in Palm Springs opens new year. Three miles of vertical ascent in total. Can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing
- joelchilders@hautepop Check out Jerome, Az. If you have time. Cool old mining town. If you are a fan of the band Tool Maynard's wine Vinyard is located there also.
- hautepop@joelchilders On to the wishlist for the next roadtrip it goes - thanks!
