This is a view of Ewell on Smith Island. Some residents are concerned about the future of the island after a plan was proposed to buy out homeowners. They worry that the plan could end their way of life by encouraging people to move off the island. (Barbara Haddock Taylor/Baltimore Sun) #Maryland #ChesapeakeBay #Water #Waves #Island

  • michaelotisIt's a shame that Maryland would offer these buyouts. Smith Island and its residence are an Important part of the Chesapeake Bays rich history and it should be respected and preserved. We were there last September and rented a house on Rhodes Point. Those folks are kind souls who love where they live and what they do as watermen. Maryland should realize this because using the money to rebuild would better serve the people, the Island and the Chesapeake Bay as a whole.
  • gardengurlmgIf we could only stop the water rising...... @michaelotis
  • vudean@michaelotis @gardengurlmg so what's the deal? Is the island going under? Is the state just being nice to offer to buy them out?
