Day 83: Sunday 24th March 2013
Sikhs, Suicide and Silence: http://www.imandeepkaur.com/sikhs-suicide-and-silence/
Why is there such an awkward silence in the Sikh community around mental health, depression and suicide? Why is that we have suffered and witnessed a number of people struggle and grapple with these crippling issues over the last few years often with devastating consequences but we still default to a position of silence.
I wonder if we can move to a more open, loving, trusting and compassionate position so we can build bridges across a community and towards a brighter more open future at a time where statistics show 1 in 4 people amongst us suffer mental health problems? Great work is being done by campaigns such as @TimetoChange, with a number of high-level partnerships. However, will the unspoken awkward truths, judgements and stigma of our community be confronted – it’s Time to Change #Immy365
