  • lady_bird_burnsI finally got boots down in Rockaway today, helping out over at Veggie Island. Everyone there is doing whatever they can to run relief and recovery operations. It's truly an amazing thing to witness. I recommend everyone take a little slice of time to actively participate in relief projects if you're able. If not, find a way to give. There is something about witnessing first hand the destruction Sandy has left behind for so many in our regional community, but it is a truly powerful and humbling thing to come face to face to the survivors and relief supporters who have unified to shoulder this recovery task. Their work is daunting, and seemingly without end, but I haven't encountered a more gracious, motivated, genuinely grateful and hopeful collective. I am thankful for all I have and take for granted, and I'm thankful to be witness to this mobilizing unification. There have been so many effected by Sandy throughout our regions, I encourage you to actively participate in your surrounding communities if possible. It's cliche but it really is like giving to yourself. Stay connected, stay aware. The damage sustained here and by other disasters lasts long after the news reports move on and the sensationalism fades away.
