Me & Primo, 2011 Ok, here's a long story for you... As you may have seen in my stream, earlier today I was photographing a skateboarding demonstration. One of the things I enjoyed about it was how the performers treated one of the kids who got to skate with them. One of the skaters was going on to the kid about, "When I was your age," kind of stuff. He went on to say, "Yeah, cuz I'm 23 now..." and I cut in to say, "yeah, you're 23, and you're saying, 'When I was your age'!" It's all relative, no? So after the demo, all the kids mob the skaters, going in for high-fives, and asking for autographs. Autographs. Of a skate demo street team. I thought about how funny that seemed, until I thought about myself at their age. I was literally the same age as these kids--it was the Summer after 8th grade--when I would go to Sea World every week (my family had annual passes, and back then Sea World didn't cost an arm and a leg to get in). There was a regular show they had call City Streets, and it featured a skateboarding duo, Primo and Diane. At that age, all i wanted to do was skate. I wasn't very good, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. And on those weekly visits to Sea World, all I wanted to do was watch Primo and Diane skate. At one point I even got them to autograph my t-shirt (which hung on my bedroom wall for a couple years). So I saw that these kids today are just like the kid I was when I was their age. It's all relative, right? Cut to this evening: I'm photographing the school dance, for the same kids who watched the skate demo earlier. I go to introduce myself to the DJ, as photographers and DJs often do at gigs like this. I said, "Hey man, I'm Emil. What's your name." "My name's Primo, bro." WTF?! I flipped out. "NO WAY!" I yelled. "IwasjustthinkingaboutyoutodaycuzIwasataskatedemoatthesekids'schoolandIwastrippingoutabouthowiwastheiragewheniusedtogowatchyouskateeveryweek!" I was hoping to tie this story up with another, "It's all relative," tag. But it's still pretty crazy, no?
