You may not be familiar with his name, but you’ve likely seen—and even owned—one of the dozens of footwear designs with which Wilson W. Smith III is credited.

The Oregon-native (@shoeitecture) spent 41 years at Nike, Inc., joining the company in December 1983 as an assistant to then-corporate architect Tinker Hatfield. By Fall 1987, Wilson was a full-blown footwear designer for tennis, cross-training, and other categories. A decade later, he was chosen as @jumpman23’s first dedicated designer.

Nowadays, the industry veteran spends time supporting the aspirations of and work by newer “sneaker architects”—most recently by way of the Savannah College of Art and Design’s (@scaddotedu) SNKR Culture Week. We spoke with Wilson last month to talk Nike in the ‘80s, designing for Michael Jordan, working with Serena Williams, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
