Philadelphia, please come celebrate with me at the dedication for the first mural in a series titled Flight. Tomorrow, Oct 27th, from 4-7pm, at 1228 Spruce St. This painting, 100 ft in the air, is so special to me. I lived in the building it is painted on when I was 17 years old. This series is so special to me. I’ve long wanted to create it, and join the long list of Black artists and writers who have used the mythology of Black folk flying in their work. I’ve interviewed so far several Black people about the idea of our ability to fly. Photographed them. Discussed freedom and healing with them. More on all that to come. Including photographs, interviews, and more murals. For now, come out on tomorrow for live readings, music, and words celebrating this work. Thank you to the assistants who did SO much work on this — Tykira, De’von, Megan, Marcus, and Nick. And to the @muralarts for producing this project, and to @universityofthearts for their help as well. Photo 1,2,5: Steve Weinik Photo 3,4: @livefromphiladelphia
