nprDerek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22.5 years for the murder of George Floyd. Judge Peter Cahill attached a 22-page legal file to his decision.
The former Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds during an arrest over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill, resulting in the 46-year-old’s death.
Chauvin, 45, was convicted of all three charges he faced — second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. But he was sentenced on the first.
Chauvin spoke briefly, giving his condolences to the Floyd family, and said other information will come out in the future.
Chauvin still faces charges in federal court. Trials for the three other officers at the scene with Chauvin are pending.
