Now that's a pricey pair of shoes.

A pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1, premiered by Kayne West during the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008, has sold through a Sotheby’s private sale for US$1.8 million, the highest price ever recorded for a pair of sneakers.

Designed by the rapper and Mark Smith, Nike’s creative director, the pair introduced the Nike Yeezy to the world and paved the way for many of the artist’s fashion collaborations. The 43-year-old rapper and record producer ended his partnership with Nike and switched to Adidas in 2013.

Created exclusively for West, the size 12 shoe is made of soft black leather with perforated detailing throughout the upper. The design features the Yeezy forefoot strap, a signature “Y” medallion lace lock in bright pink, and a tonal Swoosh logo on the heel overlay.

Kanye wore the pair at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, in which he performed “Hey Mama” and “Stronger” and won four categories, including Best Rap Album.

The sale price of the Nike Air Yeezy 1, at US$1.8 million, has nearly tripled the previous record for sneakers, which was set by Sotheby’s sale of Nike Air Jordan 1s in May 2020 for US$560,000.

“The sale speaks volumes of Kanye’s legacy as one of the most influential clothing and sneaker designers of our time, and of the Yeezy franchise he has built which has become an industry titan,” Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, said in a statement.
