Our children are watching. Maybe they haven’t all seen today’s news, but they watch every day how we as a society work, how we handle adversity, and how we respect our century long processes of democracy. Today was the first time since 1812 that our Nation’s Capitol was breached in such a violent and complete manner. I watched the news in disbelief and disgust. I listened to Congress members across both parties denounce today’s events as disturbing and profoundly un-American. I saw images of our members of government laying behind their chairs in fear, chaos for hours, law enforcement risking their lives and sustaining injuries. Today’s events were so deeply sad to watch- the ultimate crescendo that proves that words do matter, actions have consequences, and what we convey to one another lives as much in what we say as it does in what we do not say. What we allow. Today as I watched the news, my thoughts kept coming back to the simple fact that if that mob had been made up of black and brown people, today’s news would have looked very different. It was a sobering and infuriating example of Privilege that underscored even further the long road ahead of us as a nation. I truly hope that the events of today can serve to cut the bullshit, bring the political parties *together* against insurgence and inequality, and to move forward with TRUE American values at heart. ❤️
