A reminder. 👊🏽👊👊🏾 Update: Since some of you seem to be misunderstanding... 〰️ Peaceful protests do not work. MLK was assassinated during a peaceful protest and only after RIOTS following his death, was policy changed. BLM and the larger black community has been peacefully protesting for years: organized walks, events, taking a knee, hashtags, award speeches - and all of that has been met with criticism from white folk and no accountability within the justice system or larger population. What is the right way to protest and make change? Dismantling systems that have been designed to oppress black folk for over 400 years will NOT be peaceful. 〰️ “Violent” protests are exactly what earned civil rights, gay rights, 8-hour work days, and many of the rights YOU take for granted. 〰️ Those who are looting are in the incredible majority not protesters, and are taking advantage of the situation. These individuals are bringing cars and planning this. 〰️ Why is it that police are treating peaceful protests with battle tactics? Tear gas, rubber bullets, attacking civilians - this is further proof of how the police system is a flawed and continues to suppress those who challenge authority. 〰️ If speaking up NOW about violent protesting and looting is the first time you’ve addressed BLM, your priorities are clear, and it isn’t the safety and equality of black folk. 〰️ And despite all of this, black lives are still being lost and you are still more concerned with property damage - that is the problem here.
