Thousands of people, led by women, marched in Verona, Italy, on Saturday after the city council declared itself a pro-life city with ”an initiative to prevent abortion and promote motherhood.” Even though abortion is legal everywhere in Italy, the council approved a motion to provide public funding for Catholic anti-abortion groups and encourage women to give unplanned babies up for adoption. The motion was proposed by a member of the far-right party. “We decided to demonstrate against this systemic oppression because everyday, the right wing Italian government keeps putting at risk the most basic of women’s rights,” protest organizers from Non Una Di Meno, the Italian branch of Argentine feminist movement Ni Una Menos, told BuzzFeed News. Women in Italy are allowed to have abortions until the 90th day of their pregnancy, or through the fifth month if the abortion is deemed medically necessary, but the 1978 law has continuously faced resistance. Last week, Pope Francis likened the procedure to hiring “a hitman to resolve a problem,” and privately funded hospitals can refuse to perform abortions, according to AFP.
