A group of nuns of the Dominican Order in Pátzcuaro, Mexico have been breeding a colony of around 300 endangered salamanders, known locally as “achoques”, in their convent, saving them from extinction. The nuns used to partly support themselves by making a cough syrup using the achoques’ skin, but when they noticed the salamanders starting to disappear from the nearby lake, which is the only place in the world the salamanders are found, the sisters established their own achoques colony in their convent to continue supporting themselves. The sisters are now working with officials and scientists to help save the salamanders from extinction 🇲🇽⛪️❤️ (📸: Getty) - #nun #nuns #convent #dominicanorder #woman #women #achoques #salamander #salamanders #amphibian #amphibians #amphibiansofinstagram #axolotlsofinstagram #axolotls #axolotllove #axolotl #conservation #endangered #endangeredspecies #wildlife #protectwildlife #extinction #aquarium #jarabe #lakepátzcuaro #pátzcuaro #mexico #mexican
