  • noaaclimateFollowing a plateau in the early 2000s, global concentrations of the powerful greenhouse gas #methane have hit new highs in recent years.

Chemical fingerprint tests seem to rule out a major role for #fossilfuels. With more than half a dozen possible natural and human sources, how will #scientists figure out where it's coming from?

Photo: Methane bubbles trapped in ice on Abraham Lake, in #Alberta, Canada, during winter 2016-17.  In the #summer, the gas (produced by microbes in the lake sediments) escapes into the air—a process scientists have demonstrated with unconventional methods.  Photo by Flickr user juneaidrao, used under a Creative Commons license .

  • callofwild_It's carbon dioxide from fossil fuels! 97 percent of climate scientists agree! Trump sucks.
  • callofwild_You have a duty to tell the truth. Global warming is man made and caused by people and fossil fuels!
  • noaaclimateHi, @wild1_ne CO2 is definitely on the rise! So is methane, which this story is about. However, it doesn't look like fossil fuel emissions are to blame for the recent rise in CH4. In fact, researchers found that it's likely due to agricultural (still humans) and natural emissions. Some of this data goes back to 1980! We recommend giving the article a read!
  • callofwild_I definitely do not doubt that methane from agriculture is contributing to global warming. What I find alarming is the current administration's downplay of Fossil Fuel's role.
