Some people affectionately call the grimacing look, easily identified by an open mouth, wrinkled nose, raised chin and gaping tongue 'stinky face'. In this case, Lead Keeper Damian Lechner says one of our Malayan tigers was responding to leftover browse from another tiger. Tigers communicate through chemical messages, called pheromones. The process which is called Flehmen, allows the tiger to inhale a scent into an organ on the roof of their mouth (the Jacobson’s Organ). Male tigers use this to gather information about females in the immediate vicinity! Pretty cool, right?
