Meet our team! This week our #teamspotlight is on #LuckyIronFish In-House Dietitian, Ashley Leone. 🐟 Role at Lucky Iron Fish 🐟 My role as the In-House dietitian is to act as the "go to" nutrition expert for both the Lucky Iron Fish team and Lucky Iron Fish customers. I'm here to answer questions about dietary iron, iron supplementation, and using the Lucky Iron Fish to supplement dietary iron. 🐟 Why do you use Lucky Iron Fish? 🐟 I use the Lucky Iron Fish because I eat a diet that that includes many vegetarian meals and food choices that are low in dietary iron. Further, I know from my past medical check-ups that I am prone to iron deficiency, and I do not have hemochromatosis. And finally, as a female long distance runner, my need for iron is enhanced due to the iron loss in my sweat, from my intestines, and from my feet hitting the ground while I run. I love the Fish because it provides gentle iron supplementation in the amount that could be consumed in a healthy iron-rich diet- it does not supplement large doses of iron and so is unlikely to result in side effects like constipation. 🐟 What's your favourite way to cook with your Lucky Iron Fish? Any tips or tricks for incorporating it on a regular basis? 🐟 I use the Fish on days when I know my diet will be low in iron. My favorite way to use it is to boil the Fish for 10 minutes in water and lemon. I like to add a dash of honey to this hot lemon water to make a cozy drink. I drink this "tea" during the day or in the evening but avoid drinking it 3 to 6 hours after my last exercise bout. Iron absorption may be reduced 3 to 6 hours after exercise due to increases in hepcidin that occur after exercise. Hepcidin is an iron regulatory hormone that can reduce the absorption of iron. 🐟 Your favourite fish pun? 🐟 "Any fin is possible, just don't trout yourself.
