On this Memorial Day we lost the greatest sportswriter who ever lived. Frank Deford died this morning at 78. Known mostly for his writing at Sports Illustrated, to me he will always be the guy who took a chance in 1990 (along with Neil Leifer) by hiring me as his staff photographer in San Francisco for the incredible paper he was editor-in-chief for: The National Sports Daily.
