Edward Bawden contributed 16 wonderful coloured lithographs to this 1949 first edition of 'Life in an English Village' in the prettily-bound King Penguin series. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Before the war this artist was rather a withdrawn and introverted character who shied away from drawing people. He is known as someone who never drew a living member of his own family. His experiences in North Africa and the Middle East in World War II, drawing characters at Court Martial for example, sharpened his skills in this area and he does include people, individually, and in groups, in his work for this book.
