nigelipThe first time I saw this painting by Umberto Boccioni was back in 24 August 2009 at my first ever @tate exhibition 'Futurism'. At the time, having only just turned 15 the day before, I failed to fully appreciate the extraordinary pieces I was looking at. It was my first introduction to the Italian Futurists and I remember thinking how confused I felt about modern art in general. But Futurism kept coming back to me in the coming years and I became attracted to its dynamism, its portrayal of emotive violence, of progress, and of course its exploration of light and vision. It eventually became my first taste of modern art that I actually liked, albeit a couple of years later. Today visiting the @estorickcollection was like entering a time capsule, reuniting with paintings I hadn't seen in years, works that I once naively disliked and now enjoy more than ever. Futurism helped me discover the goodness of modern art at a time when I stubbornly dismissed it entirely.
