Splashes in the 'Ladies Pool' at Merewether and conversation turns to some of Newcastle's history. A time when men and women couldn't swim together. Although that particular spot Ladies Bathing Place' was further along the coast we talked about how women and children had to pay a penny to bathe in a small designated rocky area while the men could swim the length of the beach for free, seperated by a fence. Unsurprisingly my small girl was annoyed at this and declared it really unfair. How did they change it she said? Well women protested, women spoke up and women swam in defiance in the surf, and so they changed it...I'm glad they did she said... I like swimming with everyone.
