Two days before Alistair was born, my dear friend and doula extraordinaire @ephemeralwanderings stopped by with a little "mama love" gift box. In it, she had a bottle of homemade dogwood and daffodil flower essences (for perseverance and fortitude), a sachet of rose and jasmine petals (to protect my heart), some osha root (for "mama bear" strength), and a tiny glass vial, in which she'd placed a single dandelion seed. This vial, she explained, was to remind me to be selective about what news, words, and information I'd receive leading up to and following Alistair's birth to take root and grow, and what I needed to discard and not allow to flourish. I've thought about that vial (and all of those gifts) everyday since receiving them. When your heart and soul have been blasted open, as @glennbenglish and mine have over these past two plus weeks, you are exposed and vulnerable in previously unimaginable ways. Being selective and protective of who and what we let in has been helpful, as well as profoundly challenging. Historically speaking, I've kept my figurative cards close to my chest. I like feeling that I'm strong, and capable, and resourceful, at all times. I've always been this way. "I'm great in a crisis!" has been my lifelong motto. And then comes along the mother of all crises. What growth and learning this experience has allowed me to have! This is our tiny guy, Mr. Alistair Kelphy English. We love him beyond measure, and are so, so happy to have opened our hearts to have let this "Little Chicken" in. ❤️
