Part two of my series for #nationalpoetrymonth featuring poems by people who have been or are currently incarcerated and enrolled in the incredible Prison-to-College pipeline program (Link in Bio for more info!) According to the The Sentencing Project: America, as the country with the largest prison population in the world, has 2.2 million people in the nation’s prisons and jails- a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Changes in law and policy, not changes in crime rates, explain most of this increase. The results are overcrowding in prisons and fiscal burdens on states, despite increasing evidence that large-scale incarceration is not an effective means of achieving public safety. Harsh sentencing laws like mandatory minimums, combined with cutbacks in parole release, keep people in prison for longer periods of time. The National Research Council reported that half of the 222% growth in the state prison population between 1980 and 2010 was due to an increase of time served in prison for all offenses. -
I stand with the ACLU who believes that mandatory minimums should be abolished or reformed because they generate unnecessarily harsh sentences, tie judges’ hands in considering individual circumstances, create racial disparities in sentencing and empower prosecutors to force defendants to bargain away their constitutional rights. -
This week I am introducing you to Joseph who is currently incarcerated and enrolled as a college student via the Prison-to-College Pipeline program. He describes himself to us in his own words: "I am 42 and re-wired, experiencing life through a new lens. A Brooklyn native finally introduced to higher learning, I am a student and a man. I believe in progression and my developing knowledge of history solidifies my position. Most importantly, I believe that 'we can' and I intend to find my place in that." Sending love to the amazing women making this project possible Queen @bazdreisinger & goddess illustrator who brings this all to life @kimothyjoy
