I bought Deep Salt Water after hearing Marianne Apostolides give an arresting reading at the Resonance Reading Series on Tuesday. It's a gorgeous book that exists somewhere at the intersection of poetry and memoir, text interspersed with beautiful mixed media collage by Catherine Mellinger. Divided into three "trimesters," it's about pregnancy and abortion and young love and loss and rekindling romance in middle age.
.
I have these teacups that belonged to my grandmother (the one who died the year before I was born, the one people say I take after), and I never use them because I'm afraid of breaking them. But that risk is starting to seem preferable to leaving them in the cupboard to collect dust.
