You looking at me?

A hippopotamus in the Kazinga Channel, a wide 32-kilometer long natural passage that links Lake Edward and Lake George in western Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. I was told later that the channel is home to one of the planet’s largest concentrations of hippos; in parts of the channel they indeed were the proverbial dime a dozen.

They swam and bobbed passively in the water as our boat glided by, veiling their reputation as one of the most dangerous and unpredictable animals in Africa. Swimming nearby is not a good idea.
