The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. —Matthew 7:25 (NIV)

I still remember the day our family took a walk in the rain. (And not because we were running to the car with an armload of groceries...) Our oldest son had a basketball tournament at a beautiful college campus that weekend. We saw the opportunity and though out of character for us, we threw on baseball caps and rain gear, and ventured out in a steady, inviting, peaceful rain walk.
Now, had there been thunder or lightning, we'd have played it safe and stayed indoors. Blustery winds might have had us going for shelter in a basement. And streams rising is serious business -- thank goodness there was none of that. But I look back and remember the security of hiking around that campus because we knew we had a place to go had the weather taken a fierce turn. The beauty of our surroundings was not stilted because we had a foundation with each step.

In the Greek here, 'rock' is PETRA: (n.) a large rock formation in contrast to individual stones; a SOLID FOUNDATION. That's more than comfort when it rains -- it's the promise of a place to go when life takes a fierce turn.
They say April showers bring May flowers. You can look out your window this month to see whether that's true or not. But what we don't have to doubt is that we have a solid foundation. Through a gentle spring rain or the biggest gale this world can produce, we're not left standing as individual stones; the rain brings us back to the foundation. Our foundation. Our solid-as-a-rock reminder that no matter what happens during the changing of our life's seasons, there is a place to go.
It's right back to Jesus.
