frankiefennermeatmerchantsGrass fed. Free range. Four words but what do they mean? Well, they're probably the single biggest grey area within our South African industry. Firstly, understand that they are not the same thing. You can be a "free range" farmer but pumping your animal full of growth stimulants. Similarly, you can have your animals confined to a tiny space and artificially feed them grass. That'll allow you to sell "grass fed beef." It's disconcerting, I know. Secondly, I'm sorry to say "free range" is a very, very loosely defined category in the first place. Tightly packed animals with limited access to a small outdoor area will usually qualify. Luckily, there are superheroes out there who raise their animals outdoors AND on natural land with a natural diet. The stamps on our carcasses are a great source of pride but, more importantly, they're a representation of the incredible work that our farmers do. They have earned the right to sell this product and we will do our best to tell their story for them.
