altbikeboardLast Saturday one of our @thealtarmada riders @k_r_da did the LML. Here's his recap.
More than just a race, a fundraiser for a single mom with terminal cancer. Together we raised $5,224
Going into the race I was excited and ready to begin my gravel season. This is going to be fun! I couldn't wait to get some long rides under my belt early in the season.
While the weather forecast was a bit iffy with a little back and forth if the race would be postponed due to rain and cold temperatures the weather forecast cleared up a few days before the race and it was a go! While temperatures didn't reach the forecasted high of near 50°, 36° and no rain is what we got and hey what else is there to do but deal with cold feet and keep going. Thats why we love MN right?
The course was better than I expected. The gravel was hard packed and fast which was a surprise to me after the rain a few days before the race. The race was split into two parts with a checkpoint at Milltown Cycles at about mile 51. Here you received your second set of cue cards for the last 41 miles and some hot bacon off the grill. Starting to feel the cold I knew the last 40 some miles might get a little bit harder. What I wasn't aware of was the head and cross wind that we would deal with while climbing and descending the rolling hills for the last half of the course.
The last 20 miles was a bit of a blur as water was run low and it was difficult to eat enough food. With the end in sight it was a push it out to the finish NOW! Once at the finish we were greeted with music an whiskey shots to warm up.
Overall the LML was a great event to kick off the gravel season. Well organized, great course, beautiful farm land rather close to Minneapolis and what a great idea to make the event a fundraiser! I will definitely be back next year and weather depending wear some warmer shoes.
Thanks to all the volunteers and the race organizer for putting on a great event!
