My Mass Takeaway: Every Easter Sunday, our family has Easter bat races. Here’s how it works: You bend over and stick your forehead on a baseball bat. Spin around 10 times. Then race to the finish line, completely dizzy. It’s so. stinkin. funny. People running left and right, falling over in their dizziness. Everyone ends up in tears of laughter.

Think of that first Easter race in today’s Gospel. So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first. John 20: 3 – 4.

These grown men, who had just spent the last few days in hiding, terrified, leapt up and bolted through the door. They sprinted to the tomb in unrestrained excitement.

Like kids running through the yard to collect Easter eggs.

The Resurrection brings out this childlike joy in all of us. It makes us overflow with laughter. It lightens our steps. And we find ourselves running, sprinting towards hope.

Dear Jesus, fill our hearts with joy today. Help us run towards the hope we find in You. Let us drop all restraints holding us back, and may our souls sprint towards You on this miraculous day when You rose from the dead. Amen.

  • a.j.cattapanWhat a beautiful and fun tradition!
  • beautifulcamouflagedmessI love the idea of bat races... I'd never heard to something like that for this specific occasion, and wish I had thought to have our little guys do "races" (without the bats) as part of helping them conceptualize the Gospel reading. Happy Easter to you and yours... you look super cute!!
