helprefugeesukIt's frustrating how little we see mainstream media outlets talking sympathetically about refugees. Even more so that it only seems to occur during the greatest of tragedies. After the attack on a Kurdish teen in Croydon, and the fires in Dunkirk, data released this week shows 57% of asylum seekers live in the poorest third of Britain.
This is clearly not a sustainable approach, and isn't helping refugees rebuild their lives in the UK. It's putting more strain on the local communities that are least equipped to deal with the challenges of integrating refugees. We need a government that consults councils properly regarding their capacity to house and resettle refugees.
We need an "overhaul of the system" that starts finding suitable provisions to protect people from red door policies that segregate and name call those who find themselves in a new place, with few friends and often fewer services.
If you want to get involved in your local community and start volunteering in the UK to help, please email us or go to City of Sanctuary's website
