I would like to acknowledge the brave efforts of Mary Elizabeth Bowser as one of our #HiddenFiguresofVA04 during #WomensHistoryMonth. Bowser was a Union Spy during the Civil War. Despite being born a slave in Richmond, Virginia, Mary was educated and shared the same abolitionist political views as Elizabeth Van Lew, a prominent organizer of the spy operation in the confederate capitol. Also known as “Ellen Bond,” Mary had notable acting skills and played the role of an able, but slow thinking servant who assisted with functions hosted by the wife of the confederate president, Jefferson Davis.

Mary gathered critical information as servants were considered invisible and were more often than not uneducated. Let us not forget the significant contributions of Mary Elizabeth Bowser during the Civil War.
