Winning by a whisker 😸 is David Linstead’s Cat skin and blood supply.

This polarised light micrograph is a 2017 Wellcome Image Award winner. The image shows a section of cat skin where fine hairs can be seen (yellow), thicker whiskers (yellow) and blood vessels (black) are also visible showing the blood supply to the sensory organ in the whisker called a proprioceptor.

This sample is from a Victorian microscope slide. The image is a composite made up of 44 individual images stitched together to produce a final image 12 mm in width.

From 6-12 March the Wellcome Image Awards are taking over Wellcome Collection’s account. To find out more follow the link on our profile and read about the stories behind this year's spectacular winning images.
