The students of love asked the shaykh of love about the essence of embracing the beloved.

He said: It's a futile attempt to stick the two hearts together.

They said: Why do lovers delight in it?

He said: Because a futile attempt is better than the despair of no attempt.

They said: Then what is kissing?

He said: It's the illusion of having one's soul move into the body of the beloved.

They said: Then why does kissers shut their eyes when they kiss?

He said: Because they're isolated from existence when they're kissing, so there's no point in having sight in this isolation.

They said: What's the difference between kissing the cheek and kissing the lips?

He said: Kissing the cheek is surrendering to the beauty of the body, but kissing the lips is bringing of a soul closer to another.

They said: How come the lover finds the saliva of their beloved sweeter than honey, more quenching of thirst than rainwater, and more intoxicating than old wine?

He said: Because they mistakenly thought they were dissolving into it and believed that it melted the shackles holding their souls within their bodies.

They said: What do lovers find in the breaths of their beloved that they find them more dear to them than breezes in gardens and smells of flowers and perfume?

He said: They find the covenants of being near, the promises to be near, and the strongest vows to be together.

They said: Then why do their eyes seem droopy and tired when they see their lovers?

He said: Because they're intoxicated from te delight of being near each other, and almost reaching their climax.

They said: Then why do lovers cry so much when they finally see each other?

He said: You dumb wits! Because they know about the inevitability of separation!

They said: Do lovers ever find satiation?

He said: Yes, if they don't fall in love!! They said: Could a lover fall in love twice?

He said: If he or she lives two lives!

They said: Why do people look at lovers as if they're crazy?

He said: Because the intellect is a merchant who doesn't accept loss. But the heart is always spending, believing that profit is in loss.

They said: What counsel would you give people?

He said: Fall in love!!!
