daedalushowell"Airport Bar" Conceptual Art Experience Flouts Trump’s Travel Ban with Drinks & Drollity
In light of President Trump’s recent attempt to implement a “travel ban,” conceptual artists Daedalus Howell and Karen Hell are hosting “Airport Bar.” A participatory public performance, “Airport Bar” invites the public to acknowledge what it means to be trapped in the bureaucratic purgatory of international travel in the only place where humanity still feels as one when traveling – the airport bar. “Airport Bar” begins at 7 p.m., Friday, February 24 at La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge, 151 Petaluma Blvd S., Petaluma, CA. At the event, pre-printed letters to local congressional representative, Rep. Jared Huffman, will be available to sign and send, indicating one’s opposition to a travel ban.
Those who RSVP will receive collectible “luggage tags,” and a “visa” to be canceled at the event, which denies travel beyond the wine bar’s restroom. Participants are encouraged to bring their own baggage (psychic or otherwise), which can optionally contain canned goods to be donated to a local food bank.
Prior to “Airport Bar,” Howell and Hell’s recent conceptual collaborations include “Stairwell Video,” a recreation of a VHS-only video store recreation and “Le Drama Clüb,” an homage to an 80s-era teen band that never existed but could have. “Protest takes many forms and creating a context to engage with an international issue in a symbolic social environment is our way of addressing this issue,” says Hell. “This is a productive way small town artists like ourselves can lend a local voice to the chorus of outrage,” says Howell. “And enjoy a glass of local wine with your comrades in the meantime.” Howell and Hell offer a free, readymade kit for others to create their own “Airport Bar” experiences at in their own towns at storydept.co/airportbar.
