Before there was Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin. At the age of 15, Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on the back of the bus nine months prior to Rosa Parks.
Why isn't Colvin's story as widespread as Parks?
Do some research, read up on Claudette Colvin and let us know what your thoughts are.

  • beequammieThank you so much for sharing about her! When we think about the idea of respectability, Claudette wasn't considered a good face for the movement - she became involved with an older man and ended up pregnant as a teen, so between that and her "feisty" personality, she wasn't seen as someone who could garner the sympathies that someone of Rosa's stature could. And Rosa was a very strategic choice, after being involved in activism for decades prior to her moment on the bus. Really, really interesting history.
  • 1morewear@beequammie Right on!
