"I want to live in a new normal where I can reach out to people who are different from me and just be friends."

Reading through “Love Does” by @bobgoff this week (such a GREAT book, btw)
.
Chapter 10 brought me to tears, and I’m not really sure why except that maybe I just wish there was a bit more reaching out in friendship lately, a bit more listening, a bit more seeing, a bit more kindness and compassion.
.
Reaching out…across lines, across cultures, across all the things that we think divide us.
.
Listening…to hear the hearts of “the other”, to discern the truth amidst conflicting information and misinformation, to hear God’s voice and His heart above all the noise.
.
Seeing…really seeing people-ALL people-as God sees them, looking beyond the circumstances and seeing the souls, viewing the events of our world through an eternal lens.
.
Kindness…in words, in attitudes, in actions…toward friends, toward presumed “enemies,” toward “the other side.”
.
Compassion…for the least of these, for the broken, for the voiceless, for the marginalized, for one another.
.
The world is kinda breaking my heart lately.
.
But maybe instead of just wishing the world would change, maybe God is asking *me* to change. Instead of just wishing other people would reach out and help, maybe God is telling me to do the reaching out and helping. Actually, I’m pretty sure He is.
.
Instead of wishing people would stop fighting and start listening, stop yelling and start caring, stop making enemies and start making friends…maybe God is asking *me* to do all those things.
.
I love these words Bob Goff quoted from a Russian leader: “You know what it is about someone that makes them a friend? A friend doesn’t just say things; a friend *does*.”
.
May I be the kind of friend that DOES today. May I embrace a new normal and reach out to people who are different from me and just be friends.
I don’t know what better leverage we could have for reaching people with the Gospel than through genuine friendship.
