HOW TO LIVE BY THE SUN AND MOON
//
The human body is orchestrated by circadian rhythms, which are precise cycles of body processes and hormone fluctuations. Our modern lifestyle divorces us from the natural environment in which these cycles evolved, and this can severely disrupt our hormones.
//
Two hormones which run on circadian rhythms are cortisol and melatonin. When these hormones are imbalanced, we struggle with insomnia at night and feeling groggy during the day.
//
Melatonin levels are disrupted when we have our faces stuck in screens all day. Our phones, computers, and TVs emit a blue light which our brain perceives a sunlight, and it knocks down melatonin levels.
//
On the flip side, when we are not exposed to bright sunlight in the morning, we may struggle with cortisol imbalances. Cortisol has a dubious reputation as a stress hormone, but we need a spike in cortisol levels to feel alert in the morning (so that we don't need those three cups of coffee).
