Winter Gray Sky and Heartbreak

This morning's gray sky seemed symbolic of heartbreak. This old pilling speaks to better days of the fisheries on Lake Superior. A time of abundance of lake trout. Then the invasive lamprey eel made its way into the big lake and decimated the lake trout population and commercial fishing crashed with it. Another invasive species was introduced into Lake Superior and it has thrived and is desired. Unlike the invasive eel, the salmon provide plenty of sport fishing and help that industry survive. There's a tale of priorities contained within our crystal clear waters. With the right regulations, the eels could have been kept out and we'd still have a thriving commercial fishery on the big lake. It's the same struggle that we face with the Asian carp that threaten the Great Lakes. With the right regulations, we can keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes and prevent them from further decimating the fishing industry. But the opposing priorities of shipping and big industrial business seems to win over these family run fishery businesses priorities, and it seems like that the Asian carp will end up in the Great Lakes. There's also a analogy in tale of the salmon and the eel. Unfortunately, we're seeing this play out over the last couple of days. New national priorities are keeping the salmon out and not doing anything to stop the eels.

Shooting data: D810, 21mm, ISO 64, f/14, 20 seconds, 2-stop reverse ND grad filter
Shooting notes: Simplify, Simplify, Simplify. I wanted to simplify the scene to include just the broken old pillings pointing out to the void with just the point of Artist's Point coming into view. The more you simplify your composition the easier it is to make photography communicate with your viewers.
