I knew I wanted to keep playing volleyball when I got to college, but I wasn’t sure how much I wanted to commit to it. Syracuse offers Division I, club level, and intramural levels of many sports. I was initially hesitant to play club volleyball because I was worried the travel could interfere with my academics. The girls at the volleyball table during the club sports fair were also pretty intimidating. I figured I should still go to tryouts. If anything, I would’ve found an awesome group to play intramural volleyball with. I was nervous about even making the team to begin with. In hindsight, I don’t know why because I was definitely one of the better girls at tryouts that year.
Now, I can’t imagine my life at Syracuse without the club volleyball team. The team is nothing like it was when I joined freshman year (there are only two other people on the team now who were on the team when I was a freshman). I have only grown to love the sport and my team more and more though. Even on my worst days, I never wanted to skip practice because being on the court and seeing my teammates kept me from stressing myself out to the point where college was no longer fun. Whether we were winning together or losing together (but mostly winning), I always knew that my volleyball team had my back just as I had theirs. -Tahirah Newkirk '17 #SyracuseU
