They're holding #BOOKS. They were waiting at the baggage carousel -- for BOOKS. Because they knew Mom had just arrived back from a book signing and had 15 more crammed in her overnight suitcase...

This, I'm reminded, is the power of #words. I'll be the first to tearfully admit these littles would probably rather pick up a basketball or sit and play Lego video games than read. (Sob!) For all my heartfelt efforts to the contrary, books have fallen behind the flashier, techie things of their world like tablets and HD video. But this photo is evidence that *something* is getting through. That I had to open the suitcase in the airport terminal because they couldn't wait to see their books... That it was dark, and we drove home with backseat lights on so they could READ...

I don't take it lightly, this relationship we have with words. It's a love-hate partnership -- love when the words are flowing, moving, in sync and painting a story with eloquence, when they speak grace and mercy and point to Love, when I feel moved by writing and reading them -- hate when they're used to spread more hate, fear, when the words are blocked on the road from my mind to the typing fingertips, when they confuse or condemn, when they speak first and forget to listen.

I'm with you. I love words. I love their power to transform. They have been our companions since the beginning of this beautiful thing called humanity; languages, eras, century after century, and age to age... I love that the words spoken by, lived by, loved by and sacrificed by The Word, make me want to stand up and be counted too. I want to do something. To get involved. To stand up against the carousel and not wait to be affected by words, but to be a part of the voice they have in the world right now.... I'm still learning how to #write. How to read. How to listen and question and look at words in the corners of my own heart. How to speak with words, serving hands, feet that will go, go, GO wherever God has called me. But I long to #READ. To embrace the sheer beauty of words --they're a powerful weapon against tomorrow's apathy of the heart.

  • myladybibliophileKristy, I love how you spread beautiful words all over social media. Jesus has a lot of power to put good words in our hearts--I'm so grateful!

  • margie.briscoeYou beautifully express the power of words! A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver!
