JUNKANOO in the Bahamas is one of the most colorful festivals in the world! The music and dancing is a spectacle to behold, but the costumes are the true stars and hold perhaps the most cultural significance. The West Africans who were brought to the Bahamas in the 17th century we enslaved under British law, but were given a three day holiday during Christmas time, which the slaves used to reassert their humanity. In memory of their former lives on their homestead, they recreated African rituals which evolved into Junkanoo. Legend has it that slaves devoted themselves using whatever scrap materials were available; feathers, shells, leaves and newspaper. The pride of the people reaffirms the powers of tradition and cultural heritage, which can endure the most harsh and oppressive environments. It's enough to give anyone who beholds Junkanoo a rush of hope. ❤ Lily #festivalsaroundtheworld #blackhistorymonth #bahamas #junkanoo #thetravelinggirl #latelylily
