[With a Heavy Heart] The Fraternity is saddened to announce the untimely passing of graduating senior Nathaniel "Nate" Skokan, Nebraska '17. Aboard a cruise ship with family during the Christmas break, he apparently fell overboard last Thursday, December 22, and Coast Guard officials were unable to rescue or recover.
Described by his family as " . . . a beloved member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity," he was "a vivacious character from the beginning until the end of his much too short life. He loved to be surrounded by people and was always trying to lighten the mood with his crazy sense of humor and antics. If anyone could make you laugh it was Nate." Survived by his mother and father and brothers Zach '13 and Sam '18, who are both Betas of our Alpha Tau Chapter at Nebraska, the family also listed "brothers of Beta Theta Pi" as Nate's survivors.

Consistent with Fraternity protocol, flags at the Administrative Office in Oxford have been lowered today to half-staff and will remain so for the next eight days – representative of the eight young men who founded the Fraternity on August 8, 1839, "of ever honored memory." A large arrangement of pink and blue flowers on behalf of all Betas has also been delivered to today's memorial service that begins at 11:00 a.m. in Omaha.
Having also lost Brian Gurney, Washington State '17, just one day earlier due to complications from a hiking head injury in August 2014, all chapters are encouraged to conduct Beta's burial service in both brothers' memories during the first chapter meeting of the coming term.
