This week Help Refugees, Intervolve with the cooperation of the Ministry of migration and the help of community members organised a Christmas outing for over 1,300 children under the age of 12 and their families from the 12 refugee camps in Thessaloniki (Elpida, Softex, Oreokastro, Vasilika, Lagadikia, Frakapor, Kalohori, Derveni Alexil, Diavata, Karamanlis, Sinatex Kavalari) and urban housing projects Solidarity Now and Filoxenia International.
The day was full of fun and excitement, a stark contrast to the long days spent in the camps. Prior to the day, parents were asked by volunteers to choose a toy from a list, allowing parents some dignity and choice. In the morning coaches arrived at the camps to pick the children and their families up, and they all drove into Thessaloniki centre to the Asterókosmo Christmas fair.
Lunch was given to all as they left the buses and the families enjoyed the day on fun fair rides, ice-skating, bumper cars, trampolines, arts and crafts sessions, performances and a show from the municipality band.
At the end of the day, each child got a chance to meet Father Christmas and receive a present of their parent's choice.
Many parents reported that it was the best day their child had had for 6 years.
We were honoured that The Priminister of Greece and Lord Alf dubs both visited the event.
